Our Locality

Our school is located on the N6, the main Dublin - Galway road. We are just five miles from Athlone town and about 10 miles from Ballinasloe town.

Athlone is a thriving town offering many services to it's locals, those in neighbouring towns and also to tourists. The town itself is very scenic as the the river shannon runs through it. It has a large shopping centre and another shopping centre is planned for the town centre, it is under construction at the moment.

Ballinasloe town is also a modern town offering many attractions and services to those in the locality and indeed tourists. It is the largest town in County Galway after Galway City, but it is probably best known for "The HorseFair " which takes place there every October. This fair is one of the oldest horse fairs in the world and attracts approximately 100,000 visitors from all over the world each year.

As you can imagine from this brief description of our locality Conafulla has two propserous towns on either side, within our own townland we also have many interesting landmarks, one of which is Kielty Hall.

This hall was known as the "Ballroom of Romance" in years gone by. It was originally an old shed that was transformed in to a ballroom in the early 1920 by Patrick and Elizabeth Shine. It was one of the largest dance halls at that time, holding up to about 500 people. Local musicians played there entertaining their many guests who might be out looking for a wife or a husband which ever the case might be. This year sixth class undertook a project to research the history of Kielty Hall. They each compiled information from family, friends and neighbours who would have rememberd Kielty Hall in use or remembered someone talking about it. They locted many interesting photos of the founders and bands who played there and also an admission ticket to a dance in the hall.

Below are some pictrues drawn by sixth class of what they associated with Kielty Hall.
